How it is calculated
- Add tax: tax = net × rate ÷ 100; price including tax = net + tax
- Take tax out: net = price including tax ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100); tax = price including tax − net
- Note: taking 18% off a tax-inclusive price is wrong; divide by 1.18 instead.
Worked example
A price of 1,180 that includes 18% tax.
| You enter | |
|---|---|
| Amount | 1,180 |
| Tax rate | 18 % |
| The amount is | Including tax (take tax out) |
| You get | |
| Price including tax | 1,180 |
| Tax | 180 |
| Price before tax | 1,000 |
1,180 including 18% tax is 1,000 before tax plus 180 tax.
Questions
Why not just subtract 18% from the tax-inclusive price?
Because the tax was added on the net price, not on the total. 1,180 minus 18% is 967.60, but the real net price is 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = 1,000.
