How it is calculated
- APY = (1 + APR ÷ 100 ÷ n)^n − 1
- APR = n × ((1 + APY ÷ 100)^(1 ÷ n) − 1)
- n = number of times interest is added per year
Worked example
5% a year, with interest added monthly.

| Result | 5.1162% |
| APY (effective yearly rate) | 5.1162% |
| Stated yearly rate (APR) | 5.0000% |
A stated rate of 5% with interest added monthly works out to 5.1162% a year once interest earns interest.
Questions
APR or APY: which should I compare?
Compare APY with APY. Two accounts with the same APR pay different amounts if one adds interest more often; the APY already counts that.
Why can a loan's APR differ from this?
For loans, the legal APR often includes fees as well as interest, and the rules differ by country. This tool converts rates only.
