Assumptions (4)
- The pay is gross pay (before tax and deductions), in one currency.
- Every week of the work year is paid at the same hours; overtime, bonuses, allowances and unpaid weeks are not added.
- A month is one twelfth of a year, so the monthly figure is an average: a month of hourly work can pay a little more or less.
- Hours per day are the hours per week shared equally over the days per week.
Show working
- Paid hours per year = hours per week × weeks per year (or 2,087 for the US federal full-time year, as OPM uses, with 40 hours a week over 5 days). Hours per day = hours per week ÷ days per week.
- Hourly rate = the hourly pay as typed; daily pay ÷ hours per day; weekly pay ÷ hours per week; monthly pay × 12 ÷ paid hours per year; or yearly pay ÷ paid hours per year.
- Daily = hourly × hours per day. Weekly = hourly × hours per week. Every 2 weeks = weekly × 2.
- Yearly = hourly × paid hours per year. Monthly = yearly ÷ 12.
- Each figure is worked from the exact rate and rounded to the cent at the end. US federal (OPM) option: as OPM requires, the hourly rate is rounded to the cent first, then daily = hourly × 8, weekly = hourly × 40 and every 2 weeks = hourly × 80; yearly stays the annual rate you typed (for pay typed per hour, day or week, hourly × 2,087).
Worked example
Yearly pay of $70,623 (US federal GS-9, step 1, in OPM's own example) on the 2,087-hour work year: OPM gives $33.84 an hour.
| You enter | |
|---|---|
| Pay | 70,623 |
| Pay is quoted | Per year |
| Work year | 2,087 hours (US federal, OPM) |
| You get | |
| Hourly | 33.84 |
| Daily | 270.72 |
| Weekly | 1,353.60 |
| Every 2 weeks | 2,707.20 |
| Monthly | 5,885.25 |
| Yearly | 70,623.00 |
| Paid hours per year | 2,087 |
| Hours per day | 8 |
70,623.00 a year at 40 hours a week and the US federal full-time year of 2,087 hours is 33.84 an hour, 1,353.60 a week and 5,885.25 a month.
Questions (4)
How do I compare a job offer quoted per hour with one quoted per month?
Convert each offer with the hours that job expects, then compare the same line, for example Monthly. An hourly job with fewer hours a week pays less a month than the same hourly rate full time. Check too whether paid leave and public holidays are paid in both jobs.
Where do 2,080 and 2,087 hours a year come from?
2,080 is 40 hours × 52 weeks. OPM explains that "there are, on average, 2,087 work hours per calendar year" (2,087.143, averaged over a 28-year cycle of calendars), and hourly rates for almost all US federal employees are worked out as yearly pay ÷ 2,087 under 5 U.S.C. 5504(b), rounded to the cent. It is a full-time (40 hours a week) year. Choose "2,087 hours (US federal, OPM)" only for that pay; some federal staff use other rules (OPM names VA title 38 staff, who use 2,080).
Is a 40-hour week the law?
Not everywhere. ILO standards set a limit on normal hours of 8 a day and 48 a week, and encourage countries to reduce normal hours from 48 to 40 a week. Each country's law and each contract sets the real hours, so type your own.
Why can a month of hourly pay differ from the monthly figure?
Months have different numbers of working days. The monthly figure here is the yearly pay ÷ 12, the average month.

Your numbers stay on your device unless you share them.
The answer uses only the pay and hours you type; it is not employment or tax advice. Real pay can differ because of overtime, unpaid leave, bonuses, allowances, tax and the rules in your contract and your country's law. Results are estimates for information only and are not financial, tax or legal advice. Check important figures with a qualified professional before you act on them.
