How it is calculated
- For each course: grade points × credits
- GPA = sum of (grade points × credits) ÷ total credits
- Courses with more credits count more.
Worked example
Three courses: 3 credits at 4.0, 4 credits at 3.7 and 3 credits at 3.0.
| You enter | |
|---|---|
| Grade scale | 4.0 scale |
| Course 1: credits | 3 |
| Course 1: grade points | 4 |
| Course 2: credits | 4 |
| Course 2: grade points | 3.7 |
| Course 3: credits | 3 |
| Course 3: grade points | 3 |
| You get | |
| GPA | 3.58 |
| Total credits | 10 |
| Total grade points (credits × points) | 35.8 |
35.8 grade points over 10 credits gives a GPA of 3.58 on a 4.0 scale.
Questions
How do I turn letter grades into grade points?
Use your university's grading table. On many 4.0 scales A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, D = 1.0 and F = 0, but the table varies, so check yours.
GPA or CGPA?
A semester GPA uses that semester's courses; a cumulative GPA (CGPA) uses every course so far. Enter whichever courses you want averaged.
