Risk/Reward Ratio Calculator
For a planned long or short trade, see the risk and reward per unit, the reward-to-risk ratio, and the share of trades you must win just to break even (before fees).
- Reward-to-risk ratio (R)
- –
- Win rate needed to break even
- –
- Risk per unit, % of entry
- –
- Reward per unit, % of entry
- –
How it is calculated
- Long: risk = entry − stop; reward = target − entry. Short: risk = stop − entry; reward = entry − target
- Ratio (R) = reward ÷ risk
- Break-even win rate = 1 ÷ (1 + R) × 100%
Worked example
Buy at 100, stop at 95, target 115.
| You enter | |
|---|---|
| Direction | Long (buy) |
| Entry price | 100 |
| Stop-loss price | 95 |
| Take-profit price | 115 |
| You get | |
| Reward-to-risk ratio (R) | 3 |
| Win rate needed to break even | 25.00% |
| Risk per unit, % of entry | 5.00% |
| Reward per unit, % of entry | 15.00% |
You risk 5% to make 15%, a ratio of 3 to 1. You need to win more than 25% of such trades to come out ahead before fees.
